Our Friend and Fellow Member Jim Self passed away July 5th at his home in Lawrence.

Jim was a member of the Kansas Region for nearly fourty years.  He was an exceptional mechanic and crew cheif to many club and professional drivers.  Some of our fondest memories are of his quiet and humorous demeanor.  The obituary follows:

Mass of Christian Burial for James Michael Self, 60, Lawrence , will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow atMount Calvary Cemetery .
He died Monday, July 5, 2010, at his home. 
He was born July 24, 1949, in Herington, the son of Marvin and Darlene Will Self. 
Mr. Self graduated from Topeka High School in 1967. He attended Kansas University .
He was a longtime employee, as an automotive technician, at Hafkemeyer Motors in Kansas City , Mo
He was involved in various ministries at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and School. He helped with St. John’s Mexican Fiesta, fall dinners, fish fries, parish council and various other committees. He also helped KU School of Mechanical Engineering students with their race car projects
He was a member of the KU Alumni Association, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and SCCA Association. 
He married Julia Saenz on May 2, 1981, in Great Bend . She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his mother; one son, James “Michael,” Lawrence; one daughter, Kathryn “Katie” Self, Lawrence; two brothers, Marvin and David, both of Topeka; one sister, Sue Hamilton, Knoxville, Tenn.; many nieces, nephews and other relatives; and many friends. 
He was preceded in death by his father in 1993.
The family will greet friends at 6 p.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, and a rosary will start at 7 p.m. 
The family suggests memorials to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Oncology Department or the KU School of Mechanical Engineering, sent in care of the mortuary, 120 W. 13th St. , Lawrence , KS 66044 .

Checkered Flag - Jo Hanson

Long time Kansas Region member Jo Hanson was found dead in her Lawrence Townhouse earlier this week.  Friends had not seen or heard from her for several days and called the Lawrence Police Department to check on her.  After calling a locksmith, Police found Jo dead on her bathroom floor.  Police said she had been there several days.  Her body was sent to Topeka for an autopsy, but no signs of foul play were expected.  Jo was instrumental in the forming of the Kaw Valley Race Group with her partner Bill Spencer.  Jo was presented the Kansas Region's top honor, the Founders Award several years ago and remains the only female member of the group.


 According to Kansas City Region member (and Jo's ex) Buzz Fisher, Jo's Memorial Service aka Social Hour will be held Sunday, June 13th. starting at 3 PM at the Jazhouse in Lawrence,KS. It is at 926 1/2 Massachusetts, east side of the street on the second floor. There will be a band (or two-her friends)-food and drink. Please come and bring your good memories.
